California Codes, Business and Professions Code - BPC, Division 3 — Professions and Vocations Generally, Chapter 13 — Shorthand Reporters, Article 2 — Application of Chapter, Section 8017

The practice of shorthand reporting is defined as the making, by means of written symbols or abbreviations in shorthand or machine shorthand writing, or by voice writing, of a verbatim record of any oral court proceeding, deposition, court ordered hearing or arbitration, or proceeding before any grand jury, referee, or court commissioner and the accurate transcription thereof. Nothing in this section shall require the use of a certified shorthand reporter when not otherwise required by law.

Notes

Defines shorthand reporting as making, through shorthand symbols or abbreviations, machine shorthand, or voice writing, a verbatim record of specified court, deposition, hearing, arbitration, grand-jury, referee, or commissioner proceedings and accurately transcribing it. Exempts situations where law does not otherwise require a certified shorthand reporter from any certification requirement created solely by this definition.
