U.S. Constitution, Third Amendment
Quartering of Soldiers
No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
Notes
Bars quartering any soldier in any house without the consent of the owner in time of peace. Allows quartering in time of war only in a manner prescribed by law, so wartime quartering requires a law authorizing it while peacetime quartering requires the owner's consent.
