California Codes, Civil Code - CIV, Division 2 — Property, Part 4 — Acquisition of Property, Title 4 — Transfer, Chapter 3 — Transfer of Personal Property, Article 3 — Gifts, Section 1147

A verbal gift is not valid, unless the means of obtaining possession and control of the thing are given, nor, if it is capable of delivery, unless there is an actual or symbolical delivery of the thing to the donee.

Notes

Prohibits a verbal gift from being valid unless the donor gives the donee the means of obtaining possession and control of the property and, when the property is capable of delivery, actually or symbolically delivers it. The provision makes those possession and delivery requirements conditions of validity for oral gifts.
