California Codes, Civil Code - CIV, Division 2 — Property, Part 3 — Personal or Movable Property, Title 2 — Particular Kinds of Personal Property, Chapter 3 — Products of the Mind, Section 985

Letters and other private communications in writing belong to the person to whom they are addressed and delivered; but they cannot be published against the will of the writer, except by authority of law.

Notes

Establishes that written letters and other private communications belong to the person to whom they are addressed and delivered. The recipient’s ownership does not permit publication against the writer’s wishes, however, unless publication is authorized by law, preserving the writer’s control over publication despite the recipient’s ownership of the physical communication.
