California Codes, Civil Code - CIV, Division 3 — Obligations, Part 4 — Obligations Arising from Particular Transactions, Title 7 — Carriage, Chapter 3 — Carriage of Property, Article 4 — Freightage, Section 2136

A carrier may require his freightage to be paid upon his receiving the freight; but if he does not demand it then, he cannot until he is ready to deliver the freight to the consignee.

Notes

Allows a carrier to require freightage payment when it receives the freight. If the carrier does not demand payment at that time, bars a later demand until the carrier is ready to deliver the freight to the consignee, making readiness to deliver the condition for a deferred demand.
