California Codes, Code of Civil Procedure - CCP, Part 2 — Of Civil Actions, Title 6.5 — Attachment, Chapter 8 — Levy Procedures; Lien of Attachment; Management and Disposition of Attached Property, Article 2 — Methods of Levy, Section 488.335

Unless another method of attachment is provided by this article, to attach tangible personal property in the possession or under the control of the defendant, the levying officer shall take the property into custody.

Notes

Requires a levying officer attaching tangible personal property that is in the defendant's possession or control to take the property into custody unless the article provides another attachment method. Custody is therefore the default levy method for that property when no more specific method applies.
