California Codes, Code of Civil Procedure - CCP, Part 2 — Of Civil Actions, Title 8 — Of the Trial and Judgment in Civil Actions, Chapter 6 — Of References and Trials by Referees, Section 642

Objections, if any, to a reference or to the referee or referees appointed by the court shall be made in writing, and must be heard and disposed of by the court, not by the referee.

Notes

Requires any objection to a reference or to a referee appointed by the court to be made in writing. The court, rather than the referee, must hear and dispose of those objections, so the challenged referee does not decide the objection to the reference or appointment.
