California Codes, Civil Code - CIV, Division 3 — Obligations, Part 2 — Contracts, Title 3 — Interpretation of Contracts, Section 1648

However broad may be the terms of a contract, it extends only to those things concerning which it appears that the parties intended to contract.

Notes

Limits even broadly worded contracts to matters the parties appear to have intended to include. General language therefore does not extend contractual obligations to subjects outside the parties’ apparent intended scope, and interpretation must remain tied to the things they meant to contract about.
