California Codes, Civil Code - CIV, Division 3 — Obligations, Part 4 — Obligations Arising from Particular Transactions, Title 14 — Lien, Chapter 1 — Liens in General, Article 1 — Definition of Liens, Section 2874

A general lien is one which the holder thereof is entitled to enforce as a security for the performance of all the obligations, or all of a particular class of obligations, which exist in his favor against the owner of the property.

Notes

Defines a general lien as a lien the holder may enforce as security for performance of all obligations, or all obligations within a particular class, that the property owner owes to the lienholder. Establishes the breadth of secured obligations, rather than a single specified obligation, as the defining characteristic of a general lien.
