Slavery is prohibited. Involuntary servitude is prohibited except to punish crime.
Notes
Prohibits slavery in all stated circumstances and prohibits involuntary servitude except when imposed to punish crime. The crime-punishment clause is the provision’s only express exception to the ban on involuntary servitude and does not qualify the separate prohibition against slavery.
