California Codes, Civil Code - CIV, Division 3 — Obligations, Part 4 — Obligations Arising from Particular Transactions, Title 14 — Lien, Chapter 1 — Liens in General, Article 3 — Effect of Liens, Section 2891

The existence of a lien upon property does not of itself entitle the person in whose favor it exists to a lien upon the same property for the performance of any other obligation than that which the lien originally secured.

Notes

Limits a lien on property to the obligation the lien originally secured. The existence of that lien alone does not give its holder a lien on the same property for performance of another obligation, so an additional obligation is not secured merely because the original lien exists.
